Staff members are invited to the fifth annual Academic Affairs Division Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Monday, Oct. 31, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Along with Provost Andy Feinstein, the Academic Affairs Leadership team will be celebrating all the hard work staff members do year round to support students, faculty and the academic mission of the university.  In addition to the breakfast, the event will feature fun activities, entertainment and prizes.

Along with the event, Academic Affairs is pleased to host a food drive that will support the SJSU Student Hunger Fund website. The fund supports students with food insecurity. Due to limited pantry space, only monetary donations are collected at this time. Donations can be made online by visiting the SJSU Student Hunger Fund website and clicking on “Donate Today.”  As in past years, there will be a friendly competition — the college/unit with the largest contribution will be recognized by the division. SJSU Community Inivited to 2016 Innovation and Collaboration Expo

More than 30 San Jose State University students, faculty and staff members will share the ways they are using technology to enhance teaching and learning at the Innovation and Collaboration Expo on Oct. 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Student Union Ballroom. Register online by Sept. 30.

In its third year, the event is open to students, staff and faculty at SJSU. The public and members of other California State University campuses are also invited to attend. The majority of speakers and panelists will be faculty and staff who will share examples of how they have incorporated technology into their teaching to support student success.

President Mary Papazian will welcome guests on the first day of the Expo at 10 a.m., followed by keynote speaker Srinivas Mukkamala at 11 a.m. Mukkamala is the co-founder and CEO of RiskSense, a pioneer and market leader in proactive cyber risk management. As October is Cybersecurity Awareness month, he will discuss research and development of security technology including malware analytics, breach exposure management, web application security and enterprise risk reduction.

The remainder of the Expo will include panels that allow students, faculty and staff to share the ways they are using technology at SJSU. Some of the scheduled panels include discussions of course design and resource selection; the use of WebEx to enhance student engagement; options for gathering and analyzing data; CSU Chancellor’s Office initiatives on affordable learning solutions and accessible technology; and more.

A celebration of life for Dr. Helen Stevens, the former director of International Programs and Services at San Jose State University will be held July 28, from 2 to 4 p.m., at SJSU’s International House, 360 S. 11th Street. Helen passed away June 22 in San Jose.

Those who knew Helen will recall her unwavering commitment to international programs, for both those coming from other countries to SJSU and for local students to study abroad.

Helen served SJSU as the director of the Office of International Programs and Services from 1998 until her retirement in 2012, though she remained engaged in supporting global citizenship on our campus even after her retirement. She sponsored the Helen L. Stevens Outstanding International Educator Award as a way to acknowledge outstanding faculty and lecturers who have incorporated global citizenship into their curriculum in meaningful ways. She also helped to create an annual banquet that celebrates international and American students who have demonstrated a commitment to international understanding.

Helen’s commitment to international student affairs spanned most of her career in education; she taught French at a high school before being appointed as Assistant Director of International Programs at the University of Kentucky, her home state. She served as the director of International Student Services and Programs at Florida State University, as an international scholar advisor, assistant director and director of Student and Scholar Services at the State University of New York in Buffalo, before taking on her role at SJSU. She was a recipient of a Fulbright grant and served as an educational specialist to West Germany in 1979 and was actively involved in NAFSA, the Association of International Educators.

At the suggestion of her family, friends who wish to honor her memory may make a donation to the Helen Stevens International House Student Resident Scholarship Fund (checks payable to Tower Foundation) or to the AAUW Scholarship Fund for Women.

Students in the Department of Hospitality Management at San Jose State University are hosting a beer trade show for faculty members, staff, administrators and their guests (21 and older.) The event includes a night of beer tastings and entertainment at The GlassHouse, 2 S. Market St, in San Jose.

Booths from twenty different global regions will be represented through décor, food, costumes and beer. Awards will be given in five categories by beer judges and peoples’ choice voting. There are three different ticket options: $20 for 15  3-ounce tastings, $10 for 6  3-ounce tastings, and  $5 for general ticket admission (no tastings). Tickets are only available by cash.

The event showcases the work of students in Dr. Kate Sullivan’s Beer Appreciation class and Meetings, Convention and Event class. Proceeds benefit Registry for a Cause.

Students Celebrate Culture at SJSU Showcase April 21

The Third Annual SJSU Cultural Showcase will be held Thursday, April 21, at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. The event will feature cultural performances followed by a reception. Tickets are on sale now: $3 with a student ID or $5 for the general public. The event was originally founded in 2014 by Salzburg Scholars. The students, who attended a Global Alliance Seminar in Salzburg in summer 2014, were charged with promoting global citizenship upon their return. They coordinated the planning and execution of the event in its first and second year.
