All 28 Kappa Sigma fraternity house residents escaped unharmed after a four-alarm blaze swept through their home beginning around 3:20 a.m. June 21. Neighboring fraternity houses and University Housing have offered temporary accommodations to all the young men displaced by the fire. Many chose to remain outside their home through day break, watching as 75 firefighters fought the blaze, which eventually engulfed nearly all of the 20,000-square-foot structure at 168 S. 11th St., two blocks east of campus. Around 8 a.m., firefighters were able to recover fraternity memorabilia, most of which was dripping wet but otherwise intact. The Red Cross, SJSU, and Associated Students (student government) are working together to help Kappa Sigma with the recovery process, which began this morning with a hot breakfast, shower and change of clothes provided by Spartan Shops and Campus Village. The university will continue offering counseling and emergency aid. The fire required the police to close South 11th Street, resulting in heavy traffic near campus. We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank everyone who has offered assistance.  Read a related San Jose Mercury News story.
