Welch, Lauren (College of Health & Human Sciences) is Stepping Beyond

“Lauren joined the Spartan community a little over a year ago and in this short time she has truly immersed herself into the fabric of SJSU. Soon after her arrival, Lauren hit the ground running and sought opportunities to get involved, meet SJSU faculty and staff and further connect with our students. Her accomplishments include assisting with the 2019 Orientation Leader selection process, joining the Advisors Building Community committee that bring together academic advisors to talk about and share best practices, supporting Student Outreach and Recruitment by attending and presenting at the LA to the Bay and Bridging the Bay yield events, and supporting summer orientation by offering academic support to our incoming students.  She also became Kappa Delta’s faculty advisor and is now working with a SJSU faculty to conduct research regarding how to best serve student on probation. This is not a complete list of Lauren’s contributions to SJSU so far but it does give you an idea of her commitment to our campus and students. If there was one thing I had to highlight about Lauren is her student-centered work. When working with students, her approach is genuine, honest, solution-oriented and, most importantly, incredibly empathetic. She understands students have lives outside of school and takes time to get to know their story before jumping into conclusions. She follows ups with students via email not because she has to but because she wants to ensure her students have the resources they need to succeed. I truly admire Lauren and the work she has done at SJSU this past year. Lauren steps beyond daily not because she wants recognition or because it is her job to do so, she does it because she wants to make an impact on her students’ lives through her involvement on campus and working with them one on one.” — Anonymous
