This book is a selective read, for “Dirt Nerds”. There are some interesting stories of individual farmers who join in farming organically in Montana but it is a slow read overall. I am one of those dirt nerds and garden often but for the incoming student this is a snooze.

  2. Lentil Underground is a great book for folks interested in organic farming and the history of organic lentil farming in Montana. The book features the historical development of Timeless Seeds, and its originators and traces their work over time. Environmental Studies students and Nutritional studies students would be interested, possibly History. Given that its about farming in Montana, I don’t think the average first year student would find it as relevant to their lives as I did. One aspect that would be good for students is the author’s documentation of the primary materials used in the book. I can see students learning to use special collections materials this way.

I agree with Elizabeth’s take on this book. Gardening is one of my favorite activities, but I found this book slow going. I don’t think it would speak to our students.
