CSU Advocacy in the LA Times

2011 SJSU Honors Convocation

Last Friday night, I had the honor of representing the Senate and the SJSU faculty on the platform for the 2011 Honors Convocation. If you haven’t been to this event (or if you haven’t been recently) I really recommend that you attend in the near future. Honors Convocation is the closest thing SJSU does to a small college graduation, and it is an amazing celebration of our best students.

This year, the Convocation included the presentation of an honorary doctorate to Steve Lopez, a graduate of the SJSU Journalism program, columnist for the LA Times, and author of “The Soloist.” Steve gave an impassioned speech about the state of the CSU and the starving of higher education in California.

You can read Steve’s thoughts on the honorary degree, the California budget, and funding for the CSU in his LA Times column. You can also watch his degree acceptance speech from the Convocation.

SJSU Annual Budget Report

November 29th, 2010

Pie Chart made from actual pie

At the Monday, Dec. 6 Senate meeting, VP for Administration & Finance Rose Lee will present the 2010-2011 University Budget report. A&F are to be applauded for pulling this together in time for the December Senate meeting – after all, the State budget was only approved some 6 weeks ago! You can read the budget report here.

Senator Lee’s presentation  will concentrate on pages 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the report. Got questions about the report? Contact your Senator(s) in advance of the December 6th meeting.

Layoff follow-up

August 25th, 2010

As promised, the Senate has received  a summary report on University layoffs. The original plan called for some 76 layoffs; in the end, because of retirements, etc., 38 layoffs occurred. Nearly 59 staff were reassigned, and 67 filled staff positions were eliminated.  In my Department (Physics & Astronomy), we went from 1.2 administrative staff to 0.7 (we’re sharing 1 person with the Dean’s office, and walk-in Department hours have been chopped) and lost one of our two technical staff. There are, of course, similar stories from other Departments around campus. As students return this week, we’ll begin to see the real impact.

Here is the summary:

Layoff information

May 11th, 2010

As noted at yesterday’s Senate meeting, members of the Executive committee asked the division VPs for breakdowns of layoffs, eliminated positions and savings resulting from the budget reductions announced in April. The VPs provided Exec with summary information (some of which can be found in the minutes of the Exec Committee from May 3). The VPs have promised a full accounting once all of the uncertainty related to layoffs, bumping and retirements settles out between now and the end of June, and all of that information will be available through the blog and the Senate web site. Stay tuned.

Economic impact

In these tough budget times, proponents of the CSU are focusing on the economic benefits of supporting the system rather than on the pain of tuition increases and furloughs. This presentation is being given by the Chancellor’s office to the CSU Board of Trustees tomorrow.
