Students need a teach-in on California's budget mess

November 29th, 2009

This opinion piece, from Sunday’s Mercury News, calls on us to educate our students about the State budget debacle. The Sense of the Senate Resolution that Stacy Gleixner introduced at the last Senate meeting calls on all of us to engage in more advocacy for the CSU, and this sort of “teach-in” would certainly be in that spirit.

UC and CSU students could benefit from something we did back in the day, an all-day teach-in (on a weekend, outside of class time, please) on the state budget and the paralysis in Sacramento. They’d learn that their parents elected legislators and governors who let state prisons grow exponentially, at the expense of colleges. They’d learn about another intergenerational gift that will saddle them soon as taxpayers: dangerous levels of state debt and pension liabilities.”

November 20th, 2009

At the November 16, 2009 Academic Senate meeting, Provost Gerry Selter
provided the Senate with an update on budget planning for Spring 2009
and the fiscal environment leading to the 2010-2011 academic year. A video
of that presentation appears below, separated into 4 segments that will play
consecutively. If you put your mouse over the video, the four segments
appear on the bottom of the screen, you can choose from among them.

At this time, there is no detailed transcript of this video, but I am posting a
summary of the Provost’s comments HERE
