Under San Jose State’s leadership, a candlelight event will be held simultaneously on Oct. 1 at 16 California State University campuses and UCLA.
“Creating a Thousand Lights” invites everyone to show support and respect for people who have been directly or indirectly impacted by suicide, trauma and mental illness.
At SJSU, Counseling Services provides community focused, proactive and culturally responsive services to students.
We seek to increase mental health literacy, decrease stigma and build a caring, connected and empowered community through innovative programs and outreach activities such as “Creating a Thousand Lights.”
At the first candlelight vigil in 2012, SJSU community members lit 325 candles and left 94 warm, strong and hopeful messages.
This year, SJSU invited all Cal State campuses to join in. The CSU family responded with full support. The County of Santa Clara, California Mental Health Services Authority, and Each Mind Matters also support this event.
This year, candles will be lit by students, faculty and staff members of the CSU family, saying in a warm, clear and united voice, “You matter to me.”
If you have five minutes 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 1, join us at South Seventh and San Carlos streets, light a candle, leave a message and show that you care and you understand. We look forward to seeing you.
