Workshops
The Math/Stat Department has workshops for many of its lower division, Math 8W, 19W, 30W, 31W, 32W, 42W, 71W, and 133W. These workshops have noticeably increased the grades and passing rates for students who take the workshop associated with the course. For some courses you are required to sign up for the workshop and the lecture simultaneously. In other courses signing up for the workshop is strictly voluntary.
Required Workshop: If you are registering for Math 19, 30, 30P, 31, or 71 then you must sign up for the workshop and the lecture simultaneously. You can later opt out of the workshop by filling out a workshop opt-out form on the Math Dept website but since students who take the course with the workshop do noticeably better we encourage students to opt out of the workshop only when absolutely necessary.
Voluntary Workshop: If you are registering for Math 8, 32, 42, or 133A then the workshops are strictly voluntary. You can sign up for the workshop or not as you see fit.
Registration Errors
If you receive an error message when trying to register for a Math/Stat class it is often one of the following problems.
1) Repeating a class: If you are repeating a class you will need to wait until the first day of class to register. To register at that time you will need to get a add code from your instructor. If you are trying to take a math class for the third time you will also need also to fill out a Repeating a course for two or more times petition which can be found on the Math Dept website.
2) Dept. consent required: Some sections require Math Dept consent to enroll in. What this usually means is that the section will be opened for enrollment only when the other sections of this course are all full and an appropriate instructor can be found. In this case it is probably best to try enrolling in another section that fits your schedule.
3) Mandatory workshop required: If you receive an error message for attempting to enroll in Math 19, 30 or 30P, 31, or 71 remember that you are required to enroll for a lecture section and a workshop simultaneously.
4) Another possible error is trying to enroll for too many units. Make sure that you aren’t exceeding the maximum enrollment cap when you register..
5) If you have any other problems registering for a math class contact math-info@sjsu.edu.
