Wed Sep 23: Topology and Surrealism: Corpus Hypercubus Revisited

Welcome back, colloquium-goers!  The Math/Stats colloquium resumes regular talks for the next six weeks, starting with talks from three of our new faculty members.

Speaking of which: This week, we are proud and excited to be hearing from our own Jordan Schettler, who will be talking about “Topology and Surrealism: Corpus Hypercubus Revisited”, the story of how the solution to a first-year graduate school topology homework problem showed up in a Salvador Dali painting!  This talk will tell that story and, in the process, give an overview of some basic concepts in algebraic topology including cell complexes, the fundamental group, and covering spaces.

Background: All are welcome and encouraged to attend, but a familiarity with topology and/or art might help.
