Hello everyone! My name is Francesca Teixeira and I am the new Student Retention and Graduation Specialist for the Lurie College of Education! I am very excited to be joining the college and subsequently working with its staff and students! Originally born in the Bay Area and raised on the East Coast, I bring a wide array of personal life and professional experiences to my work! My educational background includes attending Solano Community College (Fairfield, CA) where I received 2 AAs in Psychology and Liberal Studies. I then transferred to San Francisco State (SFSU) where I obtained a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sexuality Studies. After taking a few years off I returned to San Francisco State to pursue my Masters in Counseling with specializations in College and Career Counseling. After graduating in 2016, I continued working at SF State as an academic advisor for a grant-funded educational program specializing in degree attainment for Early Childhood educators. In addition to advising I taught part-time in the Masters of Counseling department teaching graduate level Counseling courses. My heart has always been and will be in student success! I look forward to being a part of SJSU and the Lurie College family. Regardless if you’re a faculty, staff, and/or student, my role is to continually support you!

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted so many facets of society over the past couple of months, that’s not stopping the Lurie College of Education at San Jose State University from organizing a live graduation celebration to recognize its more than 500 Spring 2020 graduates (and soon-to-be alumni)!
This is an incredibly significant moment for our graduates, their support networks, our Lurie College of Education community, and our society as a whole. College commencement ceremonies are a rite of passage for students every year who have worked tirelessly to prepare themselves for the next chapters in their lives. While we are saddened that we are not able to celebrate with our graduates in person at this time as a result of COVID-19, we are proud of how our entire Lurie College community of students, faculty, and staff have responded and persevered during this pandemic, and so it’s our priority to celebrate virtually with our graduates to acknowledge their accomplishments and bring some closure to their academic experiences with us. We look forward to welcoming our graduates back to campus and celebrating in person together at the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 Commencement events. – Dean Heather Lattimer
The Lurie College Graduation Celebration will take place online on Friday, May 22, at 4pm and begin with a college-wide ceremony that will include remarks from Dean Heather Lattimer, Associate Dean Marcos Pizarro, and student speaker Giselle Arellano, who is graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Development.
It feels really special to be the graduation speaker, especially during these times. When I was first selected as the speaker, it was more of an ‘I did it’ moment as a first-generation student of an immigrant family and someone who is representing that small percentage of graduating Latinas all over the world. Now it feels like I am the person who is able to voice what I’m hearing from my fellow classmates, my friends, from those who are graduating from other departments. Many of us are feeling the same sadness about not being able to celebrate in person, but we still feel very accomplished and made it to a point where, even though the odds may not be in our favor right now, we still can celebrate and know that ‘we did it’! – Giselle Arellano
Each Spring 2020 graduate will also be recognized during the college-wide ceremony. Lurie College graduates, faculty, and staff have been invited to attend the event live and family and friends are invited to watch the ceremony live on the Lurie College YouTube channel.
After the college-wide ceremony, each Lurie College department – Child & Adolescent Development, Communicative Disorders & Sciences, Counselor Education, EdD Leadership, Special Education, and Teacher Education – is hosting an online reception to include remarks from faculty chairpersons, individualized slideshows, and socializing among graduates, faculty, and staff to close out the academic year.
Since this year’s experience is entirely digital, Lurie College has created some other digital items to enhance the experience, such as:

San Jose State’s Connie L. Lurie College of Education had an impressive showing in the 2021 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings.
The rankings, released on March 17, show the Lurie College placed in these four categories:
“All of us in the Lurie College of Education are proud that we have been recognized for our efforts to prepare transformative educators, counselors, therapists, school and community leaders,” said Lurie College Dean Heather Lattimer. “We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners to expand our college’s opportunities and impact in the region!”
The magazine bases its ranking of best graduate schools of education on two types of data: reputational surveys of deans and other academic officials and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students. They also assess both the preparedness of a school’s incoming students and the career or academic outcomes of a school’s graduates.

These institutes are grounded in an educational equity foundation; they are built on the recognition that access for all K-12 students to high-quality STEM+C learning experiences is a social justice issue. The coordinator will be expected to lead the institute with a social justice orientation, provide on-site and online support, and assist with data collection. Under the general direction of the Director of Student Success, Recruitment and Alumni Engagement, the Stem+C Institute Coordinator will independently organize marketing, student recruitment, scheduling, field placements, registration, payments and all logistical aspects for the Stem+C Institute. The coordinator provides support to the director, faculty, and students. This position will be an essential member of the institute and will present at informational meetings to potential institute attendees.
Through certificate programs, professional development workshops, and regional convenings, the CCI will support community college faculty and staff to develop the knowledge, skills, and understandings needed to effectively teach and lead dynamic institutions that serve diverse student communities. Under the general direction of the Director of Student Success, Recruitment and Alumni Engagement the CCI will take a leading role in engaging with project partners across campus and across the region.
Lurie College is excited to welcome it’s new Director of Development, Barbara Ybarra, to the community!
Barbara Ybarra is passionate about ending generational poverty through access to higher education, civic engagement, and community service for students and their families. With over 20 years of local and national leadership experience in the intersection of public policy, government, and the nonprofit sector, Ms. Ybarra will join the Lurie College from the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), where she has been the Interim Executive Director. Prior to serving as BLCI’s Interim Executive Director, Ms. Ybarra served as BCLI’s first Chief Advancement Officer. In this role, she grew the organization’s budget from $1.3 million to $3 million. This growth has enabled BLCI to serve over 600 students and families in a community in which only 3% of adults have a college degree.
The Lurie College of Education Credential Services office is organizing a drive to collect gently used coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and new socks. All donated items will go to the Bill Wilson Center, which provides services to more than 4,100 children, youth, young adults and families in Santa Clara County through various programs. Teacher educators, consider your own journey into education. Did you come from a family of educators? Or maybe you had a teacher who left an indelible mark that influenced your decision? These are inspired reasons to enter the field, but how do we reach those who never considered teaching, who may be the first in their family to attend college, or who didn’t have a teacher they connected with? Recruiting candidates with a diversity of experiences is absolutely vital to our mission of enhancing the quality of education for all students, but this work takes time, intention, and continuous reflection.

San Jose, Calif. — About 100 Silicon Valley thought leaders, policymakers and K-12 educators filled SJSU’s Diaz Compean Student Union Theater November 13 at the inaugural Future of Learning Summit, hosted by the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. The event included five keynote speakers and talks by five SJSU community members, all of whom addressed the question, “What is the future of learning?”
“We’re at a time of significant change in education and across society,” said Heather Lattimer, dean of the Lurie College. “We have changing job markets, demographic shifts and new understandings around what learning and cognition mean and look like. It’s a time of rapid change that can be really scary. But it’s also an opportunity for all of us to challenge the way that we think of education and schooling to find new ways to support stronger, more equitable and more relevant outcomes.” Lattimer described SJSU’s upcoming Future of Learning Initiative, a cross-disciplinary program to spur innovation on campus, serve as a hub for transforming education in the region, generate new knowledge that will elevate the importance of the scholarship of teaching and learning, and position SJSU as a thought leader in the field of educational innovation.
SJSU Lurie College of Education students, alumni, faculty, staff, partners, friends, and family are invited to attend the inaugural Learning Showcase, which will highlight Lurie College undergraduate, graduate, credential, and doctoral students’ academic accomplishments from the Fall 2019 semester! “In the 4th grade, I was given an award for “perseverance”. At the time, I did not know what the term meant. Fast forward to today, I would say that I overcame a lot of adversity, especially being a first-generation student. As students, we owe it to ourselves to try hard and go after what we want, despite the difficulties. In the end we gain life experiences and we become more resilient, all because we chose to never give up. The 4th grade version of myself would be extremely proud of me today.”
