Department of Kinesiology Scholar Award for Undergraduate Students

The annual Department of Kinesiology Scholar Award honors students from each major
curricular area within the department: Kinesiology, Physical Education Teacher Education, and
Athletic Training. The Kinesiology Scholar Award recognizes students who have achieved a
distinctive academic and leadership record. The award is intended to recognize and promote
academic excellence, to further the professional competence and dedication of academically
accomplished students and to promote kinesiology and its related fields. Applicants for the
Scholar Award are also eligible for submission to the AKA student awards (see

http://www.americankinesiology.org/SubPages/Pages/Scholar%20Awards) and other on-
campus honors.

Scholar Award Criteria:
• Senior status with a minimum overall GPA of 3.6
• Student graduating in the current academic year
• Demonstrates exceptional scholarly interest in the field of kinesiology

Nominations are due Monday, February 25, 2019 and must include:

• Completed nomination form;
• Resume (not to exceed two pages) including GPA and information related to scholarly
interest/accomplishments, leadership, and service to the profession;
• A 250-300 word narrative describing the applicant’s academic accomplishments and
information related to award criteria (see below);
• Email digital photo of student (Preferably 400 x 600 pixel JPG) to Dr. Chin:
jessica.chin@sjsu.edu
The scholar award narrative should include evidence of the following:
• Commitment to high levels of academic accomplishment and leadership
• Engagement with professional and/or academic organizations
• Demonstration of academic excellence across the discipline

Dr. Emily Wughalter Named as 42nd Fellow of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education

Congratulations to Dr. Emily Wughalter, Professor, Department of Kinesiology, on being named the 42nd Fellow of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE). Emily’s ongoing commitment to NAKHE leadership, scholarship, and the training of young professionals makes her an outstanding choice for this recognition.

The Fellows designation is given to professionals in the field of Kinesiology who have made significant contributions to NAKHE for ten years or more. Emily’s leadership in the association has been exceptional, and for this leadership she is being recognized. Leadership in NAKHE is not the only criteria for Fellow status. Emily’s scholarly productivity has added to the body of knowledge in Kinesiology in a meaningful way, one of the most important criteria for Fellowship. “Your leadership and scholarly contributions have extended beyond the field of Kinesiology to your home institution, community, and beyond – contributions that bring distinction to university professors in Kinesiology,” says Steven Estes, Fellow #12, NAKHE.

In addition, Emily has been invited to deliver the Rachel Bryant Lecture at the Society of Health and Physical Educators, (SHAPE America) National Convention in Tampa, Florida in April. “This is a tremendous honor to be invited to deliver a lecture in Rachel Bryant’s name and to be recognized by national colleagues in Kinesiology,” says Emily Wughalter. Rachel Bryant was the Executive Director of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport for 21 years when she led an organization that inspired tremendous change and created sporting opportunities for girls and women. This lecture in her name is to honor an individual who continues her legacy by leading, developing, participating, and organizing programs for sporting girls and women.

Dr. Masucci departs KIN for CHHS Dean’s Office Role

A message from departing chair Dr. Matthew Masucci.
I have been appointed as the Interim Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS). While I am excited about the opportunity, I will be sad to be moving on from the role of department chair that I have held since 2014 and from the department that has been my home since 2002.
I am pleased to announce that you will be in capable hands as Dr. Tamar Semerjian has been appointed by the President as the Interim Department Chair of Kinesiology effective immediately. I have every confidence in her ability to help guide the department through this time of change and I’d like personally thank Tamar for her willingness to serve.
Related to this change, Dr. Jessica Chin will continue in her role as Associate Chair and will assume the responsibilities of Undergraduate Coordinator for the Spring semester.
Her knowledge and abilities will be a great asset to the department in this transition and I want to thank her for her willingness to take on this role.
It has been a great pleasure to work in such an amazing department and I am committed to fostering continued success in the department and college.
