Join the KIN Department to Celebrate 51st Annual Honors Convocation

On behalf of the Department of Kinesiology, we invite you to joins us to celebrate the accomplishments of the student honorees from the Kinesiology Department at the upcoming 51st Annual Honors Convocation.  The event will be held at the SJSU Event Center on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 6:00pm.  A list of the CASA student award winners can be found below.

In particular, you can read about KIN student Erin Enguero, who is featured on the Honors Convocation website.

KIN is proud of its distinguished students and the Honors Convocation is a recognition of their outstanding achievements.

President’s Scholars

Undergraduate students who have earned a 4.0 grade point average at San José State University in at least two contiguous semesters of the three semesters prior to the Honors Convocation.

Dean’s Scholars

Undergraduate students who have earned a 3.65 or higher grade point average at San José State University in at least two contiguous semesters of the three semesters prior to the Honors Convocation.

Building Collaboration in Aging Research and Education among CSUs

On behalf of the organizing committee, I cordially invite you to submit an abstract to the Second Annual CHAMP Conference on Health and Aging. This refereed conference will take place on Friday, April 5th, 2013, 9:45am – 3pm at San Jose State University. Registration is free.

CHAMP (www.sjsu.edu/champ) is housed at San JoséState University.  Our inaugural conference last year was a part of our effort to foster collaboration in aging research and education across CSU campuses in the Bay Area. Faculty and student presentations were well received by over 100 attendees including students, faculty and community partners from the Bay Area. This year we are expanding the conference to include additional CSU campuses.

We encourage your submission focused on health and aging in multicultural/diverse contexts - e.g., empirical papers, conceptual/theoretical papers, model curriculum/program, and innovative pedagogy including using online technology. There are two presentation formats:  1) Oral presentation (15 minutes); 2) a 30-minute symposium/panel on a topic related to the theme of the conference.

This invitation is also extended to your undergraduate and graduate students. Students can submit abstracts of their research on health and aging in multicultural/diverse contexts for a poster presentation. There will be a designated time slot for the student poster sessions during the conference.

Abstracts are welcome from the following disciplines (but not limited to): communication disorders, gerontology, health science, justice studies, kinesiology, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, and sociology.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 17, 2013. Your abstract will be peer-reviewed by the Conference Program Committee and a decision letter will be sent out at the end of February, 2013. Instructions for abstract submissions are below.

CHAMP Sponsors Senior Wellness Fair October 24

CHAMP faculty invites you to visit the Senior Wellness Fair co-hosted this year by CHAMP, CommUniverCity and the Santa Clara County Department of Adult & Aging Services (DAAS).

When:  October 24, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Where: Roosevelt Community Center, 901 E. Santa Clara Street (between 19th and 21st)

Students and faculty from Health Science, Kinesiology, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and Social Work are participating to provide health and wellness screenings, education, and physical activity demonstrations to seniors from the East San Jose neighborhood.

We invite you to come and support your students and faculty, and learn about how your department might participate in future CHAMP and CommUniverCity activities.

Remember healthy aging is for everyone – if you aren’t older already, soon enough you will be! And you’ll learn about important resources available in the community to promote healthy aging for us all. So come by and check us out on October 24th at the Roosevelt Center!

The mission of the Center is to promote healthy aging among multicultural and diverse populations living in the San Francisco Bay area. With faculty affiliates from all academic disciplines at SJSU, the Center facilitates interdisciplinary aging research, education and training, and strategic partnerships with community-based organizations working with older adults.

CHAMP is housed in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts which is home to applied and professional disciplines serving dynamic societal needs and dedicated to promoting a healthy, ethical, and enlightened global community through innovative application of knowledge and scholarship.
