KIN Shines at 2018 Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness Conference

Our department was once again well represented at the 2018 Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness conference  this fall.

Dr. Greg Payne was the Keynote speaker.

Numerous faculty and students presented on a wide-range of topics at the conference.

Dr. Areum Jensen: Alterations in musculoskeletal architecture and strength, and their relation to functional mobility in adults with Cerebral Palsy, and Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder and the effect of exercise;

Dr. Gong Chen: A study on self-defense strategies and skills in real life attacks;

Dr. Bethany Shifflett: Collegiate athletes’ sport experiences; and

Dr. Seung Ho Chang: Content knowledge and knowledge packet for teaching fundamental motor skills.

In addition, there were student poster presentations from:

Aurelyn Ancheta: Robot-assisted gait therapy for people with Parkinson’s Disease (1st place research critique award);

Ro-Anne Galleta: Cognitive behavioral based physical therapy, and use of electrical stimulation in prosthetic rehabilitation (3rd place research critique award).

Dr. Chen conducts Self-defense Workshop for Bay Area Physical Educators

KIN faculty Dr. Gong Chen presented a workshop on “self-defense at knife attack” for about 20 physical educators at the Bay Area CAHPERD annual conference this past weekend, Nov 3-4, 2018. The events was hosted by the Dept. of Kinesiology, SJSU with Dr. Daum and Dr. Chen helping to lead to some of the proceedings. Participants indicated that they gained hands-on experience with several research-based self-defense skills, got a lot of exercise during the practice, and had fun while learning. Trifecta!

CHHS Health and Wellness Week in Review

CHHS Health and Wellness Week was a great success again this year! Here is a look at some KIN stats and photos from the week.

1. Two hundred players competed in KIN sponsored community table tennis tournament.
2. 40-50 students participated in Aerobicsthon-Zumba led by Angel Batt. It was an extremely excited event.
3. 40-50 students participated in  Aerobicsthon- step led by Farzaneh Ghiasvand Ph.D. It was very hot.
4. 90 students participated in the 10th SJSU table tennis championship.
5. 17 biomechanics students provided evaluations for approximately 30 to 40 participants.
