CHAMP (the Center for Healthy Aging in Multicultural Populations) at SJSU cordially invites you to our fourth annual Health and Aging conference on Friday, April 24, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This year’s conference, co-sponsored by SJSU and the City of San Jose Department of Parks, Recreation, & Neighborhood Services, is an exciting multidisciplinary event (Anthropology, Engineering, Gerontology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, and Social Work) involving several CSU’s in Northern California.

The research presentations address Working with Diverse Ethnic Populations; LGBT issues; Training Future Professionals in Aging; Skeletal & Joint Health; Mental Health of Older Veterans; and University/ Community partnerships to promote healthy aging in senior living communities. Poster presentation topics include cognitive functioning; physical activity; senior peer coaching; assistive devices; and alternative therapies (music, art, dance, and animal assisted therapies).

Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness (WSKW) Conference

The Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness (WSKW) hosts a conference each October in Reno, Nevada. Their conference includes a segment designed to help students take their first steps in presenting peer-reviewed work at a professional conference.

The deadline for submission of proposals has been changed to April 30th instead of end of March. So, if you were considering submitting a proposal (see my 3/10 email below with info.) you have extra time.

Undergrads:

In one or more of your classes this semester you may have an assignment to critique an article. If you do well on that assignment you are encouraged to submit your work for review and presentation (if accepted) at the WSKW conference (http://bit.ly/1Bt4Kxi. The deadline for submitting work is March 31st. The conference is October 7-9, 2015 at Harrah’s in Reno, Nevada. Conference registration is $45 for students.

Grad students:

Near the end of your project/thesis? Consider submitting your work for review for a poster session.

Coaching Job Announcement: Skyhawks National Camps

Do you love sports? Do you like working with kids? Have you coached before?

If this sounds like you, consider working for Skyhawks! Since 1979, Skyhawks has been offering classes and camps in a variety of sports including, baseball, soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, golf, track & field, cheerleading and much more. We are looking for folks who are reliable, highly motivated, energetic and enjoy working with children. Both coaching positions as well as site director roles are available.

Skyhawks is a national sports program provider for children ages 4-14. They run youth sports programs in partnership with cities and community organizations.

Currently, Skyhawks are looking for a few coaches who would be interested in coaching some of our year round sports programs and summer camps.   Skyhawks’ purpose is to “teach life skills through sports.” We offer the following sports programs: soccer, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, flag football, golf, volleyball, track & field and multi-sport.

LOCATIONS Positions are available in Los Altos, Mountain View and Sunnyvale.

WAGES
Our wages are very competitive. Hourly rates range from $10.50-$18/hour depending on experience.

SCHEDULE
Summer camps are typically 9am-Noon or 9am-3pm Monday through Friday. Staff will work 18-19 hours/week for half-day programs and 33-34 hours/week for full day camps. Weekly camps usually begin starting in June and conclude the third week in August. We also have coaching opportunities for our year-round programs that run September through June.

REQUIREMENTS
Must pass a background check – we run background checks through LiveScan
You should love working with kids and bring boundless enthusiasm to the job
Must have reliable transportation and willing to drive to locations within South Peninsula
Capable of transporting equipment – you’ll have equipment through the duration of the program and must be responsible for maintaining it
Coaches and Site Directors must be first aid certified. Directors also CPR certified.
All of our scheduling is done online so you must be reachable via the Internet. Cell phones are also a requirement.
