The New Technology Experience For Faculty Fall 2015

SJSU’s location in the heart of Silicon Valley gives our institution an edge in the technology marketplace, as we routinely supply high-technology firms in the area with more engineering, computer science, and business graduates than any other college or university. It’s not surprising, then, to see SJSU embrace educational methods that exploit the latest technology to dramatically enhance the university experience.

The mission of IT Services is to support student success through the innovative use of technology in the classroom and across campus, while supporting automation of SJSU’s administrative functions. We promote “unbounded learning” to enhance student success through continuous learning innovations. We do this by providing agility through an advanced technology infrastructure. Faculty and students will benefit greatly from numerous improvements and advancements that have been made since Spring of this year.

Collaboration And The New Technology Experience For Students Fall 2015

Collaboration is crucial in today’s global environment in order for any business to succeed. The earlier you understand collaboration and working in collaborative, interdisciplinary environments, the more successful you will be when you enter the workplace. Collaboration as a form of virtual communications is a cornerstone of educational transformation: students collaborating with faculty members, and with outside experts, and collaboration between students within your schools and campus and across traditional educational boundaries.

As a student, you will benefit greatly from numerous improvements and advancements that have been made to facilitate collaboration since Spring of this year.

Collaboration Technologies At A Glance
TelePresence – Think video conferencing on steroids. The TelePresence experience allows you to expand the learning environment by conducting live, lifelike meetings without traditional classroom constraints.
WebEx — Web conferencing provides flexible instruction with extended reach online. Interactive features include real-time testing and grading, instant feedback, assessment tracking, breakout sessions, and hands-on labs to deliver a variety of dynamic e-learning opportunities.

What is TelePresence?

TelePresence is high definition videoconferencing, which allows people to feel as if they are present at a remote meeting with people from another location. This technology works over the Web and allows instructors to bring external professors, industry experts, and other participants to their classroom electronically. We call these rooms Next Generation Learning Spaces.

IT Services is working with departments across campus to bring the technology closer to you – our users. Currently, we have 11 rooms that can serve your TelePresence needs and three mobile units that IT Services can set up for you to use in any room.

Mobile TelePresence units provide state-of-the-art mobile video conferencing, TelePresence, for faculty and staff on campus. The mobile units include a camera, microphones, audio controls, video display, and a simple control system. This project is a collaborative effort with input from faculty in the Colleges and IT Services. Training materials and workshops will be available to users and support staff in an effort to support effective use of the technology.

IT Services Network Winter Break Upgrades

IT Services is continuously working to improve the network services on campus. Our goal is to make it easier and more secure for students, faculty and staff to connect and use the network on campus. The network team was busy during the winter break, performing wireless, switch and firewall upgrades across campus.

After a significant amount of planning and preparation, the following buildings were upgraded to Cisco wireless service over the break:network equipment

  • Event Center
  • South Campus
  • King Library

In the Dining Commons, wireless service was added where it was not previously available. The SJSU wireless upgrade project has been completed and all buildings have new upgraded wireless.
The campus internet firewall was also upgraded from a 2Gbps firewall to a new state of the art Next Generation 40Gbps firewall. The new firewall has the speed and capacity to support campus growth for years to come. Lastly, all the network switches in the King Library and the Health building have been upgraded to new switches providing 1Gbps access on each port.

IT Services continues to tune and enhance the network to enable the most effective service based on usage and traffic patterns. If you are having trouble connecting to SJSU wired or wireless networks, or have any questions about network services, contact the IT Help Desk at 408-924-1530 or ithelpdesk@sjsu.edu. We’ll help get you connected!
