SJSUOne Passwords are only good for just over five months, SJSUOne Passwords have to be reset every 180 days, that’s between 5 and 6 months. You have three options to reset your password, if one does not work; please try the next one!

If SJSUOne login is not successful please go to the following link for help, and more information, about using this system:

http://my.sjsu.edu/help/pswd_signin_help/index.html

or, if that does not work:

http://its.sjsu.edu/services/sjsuone/

If you have to set a new, or reset a lost, SJSUOne password, there is a PDF with the procedure here. It can sometimes be helpful to print this procedure so you can read it as you follow the process on your computer or portable device.

http://www.ssloan.net/sjsutech/sjsuone_reset.pdf

Please make note the Password Requirements. Often, reset failures can be traced to the attempted use of incorrect passwords.

Example Password: 1Spartans!

REMEMBER – you have other options to reset your password, if one of the above does not work; try the next one!

SECOND OPTION

If the first option does not work for assistance with your SJSU ID and/or password, please follow this link and complete this form. The Information Support Services (ISS) group will respond to you via e-mail – usually within 2 business days. Please do not send multiple requests. All fields are required.

THIRD OPTION

Are you on campus? If so, you can come visit us. If you need help with this, or have forgotten the answers to your five questions, please come to the ITSS Help Desk on the First Floor of Clark Hall, room 102, during our normal business hours for assistance if you are here. Tell us you were unable to reset your own password, even though you tried.

Clare Wadsworth on new computer in Clark Hall 102

SJSU Molecular Biology Major Clare Wadsworth was the first student to use a new computer in the Academic Success Center’s Computer Lab. The lab is provided for student’s at SJSU by Academic Technology.

On the morning of Thursday, February 9, Wadsworth came to Clark Hall 102 to use the lab, not knowing new equipment was being installed there. When asked how she liked the computer Wadsworth said, “It’s amazing. It runs really well. The new keyboard is great. There is no lagging with this computer. It’s not slow like the PCs. This is a really awesome computer!”

The computers have new software too. They have Adobe Creative Suite 5.5. They are loaded with SPSS 20, Microsoft Office 2011, the latest Apple applications and much more. They even have Apple’s new iBooks Author program for creating iPad formatted eBooks and text books. It is hoped these computers, and the software on them, will help our students achieve their academic goals using the latest technology at San Jose State University.

Folks with questions on these can contact Steve Sloan, (408) 924-2374 or steve.sloan@sjsu.edu.

Securing Lion http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/02/01/securing-lion/ http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/02/01/securing-lion/#comments Wed, 01 Feb 2012 20:28:43 +0000 Steve Sloan http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/?p=303 In this presentation by MacWorld we are shown how to use FileVault 2 on MacOS X 10.7, Lion. The presentation starts off, “Apple latest Mac operating system, OS X 10.7 Lion includes FileVault 2, the latest version of Apple’s method of file encryption. In this how-to, we’ll go through the steps on activating FileVault 2 for your Mac’s internal startup drive.”

Thanks Ezequiel Cothran for sharing this with me. It is good to read through everything here to be thoroughly ready to secure your data. Especially read the comments! Use at your own risk.

Security Issues and MacOS X Lion http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/01/31/security-issues-and-macos-x-lion/ http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/01/31/security-issues-and-macos-x-lion/#comments Tue, 31 Jan 2012 17:12:25 +0000 Steve Sloan http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/?p=301 According to technical communicator, Phil Stokes, “Security in OS X Lion is a big problem that not many people are aware of.” In a recent blog post Stokes wrote:

Security in OS X Lion is a big problem that not many people are aware of, and here’s why: your Lion computer contains the install/recovery disk on the internal drive. That means anyone with a basic knowledge of Mac and Lion can start up your mac and reset your passwords, thereby accessing your user accounts and all your personal data.

Stokes informative post suggests ways to secure a Lion system including removing the install/recovery disk, setting a firmware password and/or using FileVault 2 (FV2). Stokes said, “Apple, of course, thought about this problem. Their own solution is to encourage you to use FV2 to encrypt all your data. Indeed, this is the BEST solution.”

If you support MacOS X 10.7 Lion you need to read this!

Adout employee e-mail http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/01/23/adout-employee-e-mail/ http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2012/01/23/adout-employee-e-mail/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 17:52:31 +0000 Steve Sloan http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/?p=296 I am sorry we do not have input on the generation of employee e-mail accounts at this help desk.

According to Victor Van Leer, SJSU’s Director of Systems Services, ITS; this is how new e-mail accounts are generated:

With the start of the new semester, we are asked to provide this information to help departments with new hires ensure that email and SJSUOne accounts are ready for their employee’s first day of employment.

Ensuring New Employees Receive their Email and SJSUOne Accounts:

ITS Systems Services distributes official campus addresses and SJSUOne accounts through our automated online process.  If your department has new hires, the process below will ensure that they receive their accounts.  Entering the employment data into MySJSU Peoplesoft before their start date is critical to ensuring a smooth start.

This process happens daily:

  • SJSUOne receives a list of new employees from CMS at noon.
  • We run an automated process to create e-mail addresses for the new faculty/staff.
  • The e-mail address is published to the Campus Directory.
  • The individuals new address is published in his/her SJSUOne Account Management page and visible upon login.
  • The new employee activates his/her SJSUOne Account: SJSUOne “Activate Account”
  • The Campus Email account is available for use at http://mail.sjsu.edu

Tips for Departments with New Hires:

  • Although SJSUOne receives updates daily, it may take up to 3 days for recent CMS changes to be reported to SJSUOne. If you need your employee’s workstation set up before their first day of work, make sure Human Resources has your employee’s information and start date fully entered in CMS.
  • You can verify an employee’s e-mail address by looking in the Campus Directory Web site.
  • If your department uses MySJSU Peoplesoft for Human Resources, then ensuring that your new hires are in Peoplesoft with complete records that include valid start date, date of birth and ZIP should ensure that SJSUOne receives these records.  If you have consultants that are not part of the typical hiring process or are part of an Auxiliary department that does not use Peoplesoft, you may need to submit a Person of Interest form to have your employees recognized.  The Human Resources Person of Interest form is at:
    http://www.sjsu.edu/hr/links/mysjsu_poi_form

Please ensure that the Peoplesoft “Preferred Name” of your employees is entered and reflects the name we should use to generate a unique email address.

Training in Google Apps (email, calendar) is available for your new employees:
http://uts.sjsu.edu/systems/campus-email/staff-faculty-campus-email/training/

We hope the information above is helpful and we wish you a smooth start to the new semester. Feel free to share this information with your colleagues and users.

Mac OS X update causing problems with SJSU Wireless http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2011/10/24/mac-os-x-update-causing-problems-with-sjsu-wireless/ http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/2011/10/24/mac-os-x-update-causing-problems-with-sjsu-wireless/#comments Mon, 24 Oct 2011 23:13:00 +0000 Steve Sloan http://blogs.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/?p=294 Here is what we know about this situation. We will update this post as we get more information. This seems to be affecting many SJSU Users.
SJSU Help Desk staffer Tony Ly reports:
In the past week or so there have been many issues from customers arising with the inability to get to the Wi-Fi portal log-in page within Mac OS X 10.7.2. Customers reported the prior point updates (10.7.0 and 10.7.1) worked and that the portal log-in pages appeared without issue. They specifically say that the page either stays a blank white screen or stuck on the redirecting page and never redirects to the actual portal log-in page. There seems to be a widespread issue relating to the recent (10.7.2) system update.
Provided here are some links that point to similar issues from others users across the United States/Other Countries:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1249903 – Posts 1 and 2 specifically mention issues with an authentication method such as the one used on campus. Others mention problems as well but don’t specifically mention if it has to do with an authentication method.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/16508629#16508629 – This page talks about a large amount of people at a school is unable to connect to the campus Wi-Fi after updating to the 10.7.2 update. In this post it also cites links to other threads that are having the same issue.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3423327?start=0&tstart=0 – In this thread it mentions an issue logging into Wi-Fi at a Public Library that uses an Authentication Method before being able to access the internet.
These are the web sources of people having issues with the recent Mac OS X 10.7.2 update involving an Authentication Method. Is there a workaround for this? Because this is a widespread issue now.

August 2011 Help Desk by Topic

August 2011 was an incredible, unforgettable, month at our help desk. In addition to having to deal with construction-without-closing and our help desk moving right before the semester; we had the busiest days we have ever seen at our help desk. A normal semester start would be in the neighborhood of 500-600 customer contacts in a day. We hit our all-time peak on Thursday Aug. 25 with 1,131 customer contacts. Actually, the day before, with 945 customer contacts seemed worse. I think that was because our workflows were as yet untested. By the next day we were veterans!

The big hit came on SJSUOne activations and renewals. We had over 1,000 of those on the first two days of the semester alone! In the month of August, most of which was in summer break, we had:

  • 3,017 SJSUOne related contacts
  • 399 related to e-mail (not SJSUOne)
  • 25 related to hardware issues
  • 252 related to software
  • 669 related to Desire2Learn
  • 1,239 requiring referral to other groups on campus
  • 1,126 that were none of the above.

In the pie chart you can see how these divide out by topic.

ITSS Help Desk Academic Year-to-date. July and August 2011.

In the academic year-to-date chart you can see how the workload built up to the end and seemed to peak on the first two days of the semester. On the following week it returned to a more normal Fall semester start 500-600 customer contacts a day on Mondays thru Thursdays.

SJSU ITSS Help Desk Aug. 2011 by Week

In the by the week chart you can see how our week-to-week numbers built until the fifth week where we saw the first inversion which seemed to signal a return to more normal business levels.

This report covers our help desk functions and not our lab support functions. I hope this is useful to those who read this.
