COMM Prof’s Play to Open in Boston

Professor Matthew Spangler’s play, The Kite Runner, opens at the New Repertory Theatre in Boston next week. The play, adapted from Khaled Hosseini’s highly-acclaimed 2003 novel about an Afghan boy and his father who flee Afghanistan first for Pakistan and then to Fremont, California. In a recent article in Boston.com, Professor Spangler had this to say about his play:

“One thing I came to really love about this book as I was writing this play was that it has a wonderful degree of humanity, and it’s very unapologetic about that,” playwright Matthew Spangler says by phone from California. “There’s hardly a cynical beat in the book or in the play, and I thought it was worthwhile to tell that story in a time of deep cynicism.”

The play’s world premiere was at the San Jose Repertory Theatre in 2009.
